Guest post: Nikki’s hacked Honeycomb Dress

Hi stitchers! We are back with another amazing guest post and this time we’ve got the incredibly talented Nikki G from Sewing My Style who has hacked the Honeycomb Dress sewing pattern. Nikki is a sewing tutor, fashion designer and sewing blogger based in Atlanta, Giorgia. She is also part of the Atlanta Sewing Community and she teaches sewing at the popular Topstitch Studio and Lounge.

Some time ago we asked her if she wanted to hack the popular Honeycomb Dress and Shirt sewing pattern, one of our best-sellers and a great garment to wear all year around depending on the version you choose and the fabric you go for.

Honeycomb is perfect for advanced beginners looking to up their sewing game and a comfortable make for intermediate makers. With the Honeycomb Dress and Shirt sewing pattern you will learn how to master the well-known ‘burrito technique’, construct a button placket, sew gathers, create a Mandarin collar and apply bias binding to the sleeveless version. Here you can find the YouTube tutorial for the pattern where we take you through all the steps and there is also a ‘Sew-along’ we hosted on the blog.

Read along to see the main changes Nikki made to her beautiful Honeycomb version. First, she chose the sleeveless version using this beautiful blue linen, a perfect combination for warm sunny Summer days. She added a colourful bias tape to finish the armholes.

Then, instead of attaching the side ties in between the front and side bodice panels to create a more fitted look if needed, she added two eyelets closer to the side seam and there she added the side ties. Therefore, her version gives an even comfier, looser feeling to it. I also love the contrast of the colours used for the ties against the blue of the fabric.

The other main change she made was removing the front button placket completely and instead adding a zip (and what an amazing zip that is!). I absolutely love this idea, it is so clever and it changes the sort of romantic look the Honeycomb Dress usually has. It looks modern and very cool.

And here you can see the whole look again! It is so perfect for the Summer months or you can layer it up if it gets chilly with a top underneath or a cardigan on top.
